How your Chinese zodiac element is found
Each Chinese year has an animal and an element. We first find the Chinese year that contains your birthday, using Chinese New Year rather than January 1. Then we read the element of that year.
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water rotate in two-year pairs: one Yang year, then one Yin year. The animal repeats every 12 years. The full mix of animal and element takes 60 years to come back around.
That is why “What is my Chinese zodiac sign and element?” is one question with two parts. If you only know the animal, you still do not have the full sign.

These are traditional qualities of the year, not a medical diagnosis. Use them as a way to name the tone of your sign.

Earth

Metal is the element of edge and structure. A Metal year often favors clear standards, a composed manner, and a line that does not move easily.
水
Water
Water is the element of movement and timing. A Water year often favors reading people well and taking a path that can bend without breaking.
Yin and Yang
A Yang year usually feels more outward: quicker to act, easier to see. A Yin year usually feels more inward: careful, absorbing, less noisy. Neither is better. They simply color the same animal differently — a Yang Metal Dragon does not wear the year the same way a Yin Metal Rabbit does.

How do I find my Chinese zodiac element?+
Enter your month, day, and year of birth. Your element belongs to the Chinese year of that date — the same year that gives you your animal sign.
Is my element the same as my animal?+
No. The animal repeats every 12 years. The element changes more often, so two Dragons can be Metal, Water, or Wood depending on the year.
Why do I need a full birth date?+
Chinese New Year usually falls in January or February. If you only enter a year, a winter birthday can be given the wrong year, and the wrong element with it.
What are Yin and Yang?+
They describe the tone of the year. Yang years tend to read as more outward. Yin years tend to read as more inward. Your result shows both the element and this quality.
