We are a small independent team that built the Chinese zodiac calculator we wished existed: one free page that gives you your zodiac animal, element, and Yin or Yang — calculated with the real Lunar New Year boundary instead of a rough January 1 cutoff.
Chinese astrology has more than two thousand years of history, and the twelve animals remain one of the world’s most loved traditions. Yet most online calculators treat it casually, guessing your sign from the calendar year alone. For the millions of people born in January or February, that guess is simply wrong. We wanted a tool that respects the tradition — and the user.

The Chinese zodiac follows the lunisolar calendar, so a “zodiac year” runs from one Lunar New Year to the next — and that date moves between January 21 and February 20 in the Gregorian calendar. Our calculator converts your Gregorian birth date to its lunar equivalent using the traditional lunisolar calendar, then reads off the animal, heavenly stem, and earthly branch for that lunar year.
The practical upshot: if you were born on February 3, 1985, a January 1 based tool would call you an Ox, but the Year of the Ox did not begin until February 20, 1985 — so you are a Rat. Our calculator catches exactly these cases, and it is the single most common reason people write to us.
Many zodiac sites assign your animal using January 1. That is wrong for anyone born in January or February. We draw the boundary at the exact date of each Lunar New Year, so a birthday like February 3, 1985 is matched to the correct sign.
