Chinese Zodiac Element Calculator

Your Chinese zodiac element comes from your birth year. Every Chinese year has both an animal — the 12 signs everyone knows — and an element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. The animal repeats every 12 years, but the animal-and-element pair only repeats every 60. That is why “what is my Chinese zodiac sign and element” is one question with two parts.

To answer it, find your Chinese zodiac year first. The Chinese year does not begin on January 1 — it begins on Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20. If you were born before that date, your zodiac year is the previous calendar year. Then read the element that belongs to that year, and you have your full sign: something like Metal Dragon or Water Rabbit.

Here is a worked example. The year 2024 has the stem Jia (甲), which is Wood, and the branch Chen (辰), which is the Dragon — so 2024 is a Wood Dragon year. But that only applies from February 10, 2024, the date Chinese New Year began that year. A birthday in January 2024 is still a Water Rabbit — exactly the birthday that year-only calculators get wrong.

Each Chinese year is named by one of ten Heavenly Stems paired with one of twelve Earthly Branches. The branch gives the animal; the stem gives the element — and each stem also carries a Yang or Yin polarity. Ten stems and twelve branches advance together, so the full combination takes 60 years to repeat: the sexagenary cycle. A 2024 Wood Dragon and a 1964 Wood Dragon are the same full sign; a 2000 Metal Dragon is a different one.

One boundary matters more than any other: the Chinese year starts on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. A person born on February 1, 2024 belongs to the previous zodiac year — the Water Rabbit — not the Wood Dragon. This calculator checks the exact New Year date for every birthday.

Read the element as the tone of your sign and the animal as its core. A Fire Horse and a Metal Horse are both Horses — fast, candid, allergic to fences — but the Fire one wears that temperament louder, while the Metal one gives it discipline and edges.

Take the Dragon as a longer example. A 2000 Metal Dragon gets edge and structure: standards held high, pride held higher, a strong instinct for what is essential. A 2012 Water Dragon is the navigator of the family — the same ambition, but it reads the room first and routes around obstacles instead of through them. A 2024 Wood Dragon leads with growth: more experiments, more prototypes, more willingness to start before everything is certain. Same animal, three very different ways of using that confidence.

The polarity adds one more layer. Yang years tend to read as more outward — quicker to act, easier to see. Yin years tend to read as more inward — careful, absorbing, less noisy. Neither is better; they simply color the same animal differently.

The five elements relate in a generating cycle: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water, and Water nourishes Wood back into growth. Elements sitting side by side in this loop are read as supportive; each element also challenges the one it controls — Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, and so on.

In practice, animal relationships carry most of the weight in Chinese zodiac compatibility, and the element adds a supporting tone. Two people whose elements feed each other tend to read as easier; opposing elements add friction that the animals may or may not offset.
