The 12 animal signs combine with the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — to form a 60-year cycle. The animal repeats every 12 years, but the animal-and-element pair only returns every 60.

The Dragon shows the cycle clearly — every Dragon year carries a different element:
A Chinese zodiac year is a lunar year, not a calendar year. Twelve animals — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig — take turns in a fixed order, so each animal repeats every 12 years. That is why anyone who knows your birth year can usually guess your animal, and why 1984, 1996, 2008, and 2020 are all Rat years.
The animal is only half of the sign. Each year also carries one of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water — which changes in two-year pairs. Because 12 animals and 5 elements advance together, the full combination takes 60 years to repeat. A Water Monkey like 1992 will not come around again until 2052.
Each year also has a Yin or Yang quality, taken from the same cycle. Together the animal, element, and polarity make up the full meaning of a Chinese zodiac year — a Water Monkey year reads very differently from a Fire Monkey year like 1956 or 2016.
The Chinese zodiac years meaning is easiest to read as a stack of layers. The animal gives the core temperament of everyone born that year — the Horse is restless and independent, the Ox is patient and steady. The element sets the tone for that generation of the sign: Metal sharpens it, Water makes it more adaptable, Fire makes it more visible. The polarity points that energy outward or inward. No single layer works alone — use the lookup tool above to see all three for your year together.
The boundary that trips almost everyone up is the start date. The Chinese zodiac by year does not switch on January 1 — it switches on Lunar New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20 depending on the year. Everyone born before that date belongs to the previous animal year, which is why the exact Lunar Year Dates in the chart above are more reliable than the year alone.
In short: find your birth year in the chart, check whether your birthday fell before or after that year’s Lunar New Year date, then read the animal and element on that row. That two-step check is all the calculation a Chinese zodiac year requires — and it is the same check the lookup tool at the top of this page runs for you.
A Chinese zodiac year does not begin on January 1. It begins on Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, and it ends the day before the next Chinese New Year.
Take 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse. It starts on February 17, 2026 and ends on February 5, 2027. A child born on February 10, 2026 is still a Snake, because the Horse has not arrived yet.
2026 Fire Horse
Starts: February 17, 2026
Ends: February 5, 2027
If you were born before Chinese New Year, your zodiac sign may belong to the previous animal year. A January birthday almost always does, and early-February birthdays depend on the exact New Year date of your birth year — check the Lunar Year Dates column in the chart above, or skip the guesswork entirely.
The Chinese zodiac years follow a repeating 12-year cycle of animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Recent examples: 2020 Rat, 2021 Ox, 2022 Tiger, 2023 Rabbit, 2024 Dragon, 2025 Snake, and 2026 Horse. Each zodiac year starts on Lunar New Year, not on January 1. See the 12 Chinese zodiac signs
Enter your birth year in the lookup tool at the top of this page to see your animal, element, and Yin or Yang instantly. It works like a Chinese zodiac years calculator. If you were born in January or February, use the exact-date calculator instead, because the zodiac year may belong to the previous animal. Look up your birth year
2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse. It starts on February 17, 2026 and ends on February 5, 2027, when the Year of the Fire Goat begins. Anyone born between those dates belongs to the Horse sign with the Fire element. Read about the Horse sign
No. The Chinese zodiac year starts on Lunar New Year, also called Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20. If you were born before that date, your sign belongs to the previous zodiac year — a January 2024 birthday is a Rabbit, not a Dragon.
Each animal repeats every 12 years in the same order. For example, Dragon years include 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024. The animal is only half of the sign — each repeat carries a different element, which is why 2000 is a Metal Dragon and 2024 is a Wood Dragon. Read about the Dragon sign
The 12 animals and the 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) advance together, and 12 × 5 = 60. The same animal-and-element combination — such as Water Monkey — only returns every 60 years, a cycle known in Chinese tradition as the sexagenary cycle. The meaning of a Chinese zodiac year comes from three layers: the animal (core temperament), the year's element — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water (the tone of that generation) — and Yin or Yang. A 1992 Water Monkey, for example, pairs the quick-witted Monkey with Water's adaptability. Look up your year in the tool at the top of this page to see all three layers together. 1990 is the Year of the Metal Horse, starting January 27, 1990. 2000 is the Year of the Metal Dragon, starting February 5, 2000. Birthdays before those dates belong to the previous sign — a January 1990 birthday is a Snake, and a February 1, 2000 birthday is an Earth Rabbit. Look up 1990 or 2000 in the tool above
