2015 Chinese Zodiac: Year of the Wood Goat

2015 was the Year of the Wood Goat, also called the Sheep or Ram. The Chinese zodiac year began on February 19, 2015 and ended on February 7, 2016. People born before February 19, 2015 belong to the previous Wood Horse year.

The sign is 羊 (Yáng), the eighth animal in the 12-year cycle. Its full traditional year name is 乙未, Yǐ Wèi: Yin Wood paired with the Goat's earthly branch. Goat, Sheep, and Ram are English names for the same zodiac sign, not three different animals.

A calendar year and a Chinese zodiac year do not start on the same day. The 2015 Goat year begins at Chinese New Year, not on January 1, so January and early-February birthdays are still Wood Horse birthdays.

The switch is exact: February 18, 2015 is Wood Horse; February 19 is Wood Goat. The Goat year continues through February 7, 2016, and the Fire Monkey begins on February 8, 2016.

The 2015 Chinese zodiac element is Wood. More precisely, the heavenly stem is Yin Wood, 乙 (Yǐ), paired with the Goat's earthly branch 未 (Wèi). Together they make 乙未, Yǐ Wèi, the Wood Goat year.

In traditional five-element symbolism, Wood is associated with growth, flexibility, and cooperation. The Goat is often associated with gentleness, empathy, and artistic sensibility. These are cultural symbols rather than a scientific assessment of anyone's personality.

Goat years return every 12 years, but their elements change. The full 乙未 combination repeats every 60 years: 1955, 2015, and 2075. To check another birthday, open the Chinese Zodiac Element Calculator.

Traditional strengths. Wood Goat descriptions often emphasize creativity, cooperation, and empathy: an instinct to make a group, home, or project feel more considered.

Potential challenges. The same traditional language can point to sensitivity, hesitation, or taking on too much for others. These are tendencies in folklore, not fixed traits or predictions for children born in 2015.

What Wood adds. Compared with other Goat years, Wood is traditionally read as adding growth and flexibility. Where an Earth Goat may be described as more settled and a Metal Goat as more exacting, the Wood Goat is often framed around shared growth, adaptable ideas, and cooperative work.
