Best Chinese Zodiac Matches

Traditional charts treat two kinds of pairings as the strongest Chinese zodiac matches: signs that share a Three Harmonies trio, and the six Six Harmonies close pairs — sometimes called secret friends — believed to quietly cover for each other’s weak spots.

Least Compatible Chinese Zodiac Signs

Clash and harm pairs are traditionally considered more challenging. These descriptions are not a verdict on your relationship: a clash does not mean that two people cannot get along.

Clash pairs (Liu Chong)

Direct opposites on the zodiac wheel.

Harm pairs (Liu Hai)

Quieter friction that wears on trust over time.

🐀 Rat Compatibility

The Rat's quick, observant mind is read best beside the steady Ox, its traditional close pair, and with the ambitious Dragon and the playful Monkey — its San He trio. In love, the Rat wants a partner who is loyal and mentally quick; it shows affection through practical care and sharp timing rather than grand speeches. With the Horse, its direct clash, the friction is pace: the Rat plans while the Horse bolts. With the Goat, the quiet harm shows up as mismatched emotional budgets — the Rat counts, the Goat feels. Naming that difference early keeps both pairs workable.

🐂 Ox Compatibility

The Ox rewards patience, and its classic partner is the clever Rat — the secret friend pairing traditional charts trust most. Snake and Rooster complete its harmony trio: all three value precision, loyalty, and results that last. In love, the Ox is dependable to a fault, showing devotion through consistency rather than words. The hard rows are Goat and Horse. With the Goat, the clash is tempo — the Ox pushes forward while the Goat drifts toward comfort. With the Horse, it is freedom: the Horse resents schedules the Ox lives by. An Ox does better in these pairs when it negotiates routines instead of enforcing them.

🐅 Tiger Compatibility

Bold Tiger runs with Horse and Dog in its harmony trio — three signs that live at high intensity and respect directness. Pig is its secret friend, quietly absorbing the Tiger's excesses. In love, the Tiger is loyal once committed but needs room to roam; a partner who competes for the Tiger's spotlight burns out fast. The traditional challenges are Monkey, its direct clash — a duel of wits that rarely declares a winner — and Snake, the harm pair, where suspicion grows in silence. With either, the Tiger's one practical fix is the same: say what you actually want before the power games start.

🐇 Rabbit Compatibility

Gentle Rabbit belongs to the Goat–Rabbit–Pig trio, three signs that prize peace and beauty, with loyal Dog as its close pair — one of the warmest matches in the cycle. In love, the Rabbit needs emotional safety above passion: harsh words land harder than intended and linger longer. Rooster is its direct clash, and the pattern is volume — the Rabbit's quiet retreat against the Rooster's running commentary. Dragon, its traditional harm, erodes the Rabbit's standing one small slight at a time. In both pairs the Rabbit's leverage is the same: state boundaries calmly and early, because silence reads as consent to a louder sign.

🐉 Dragon Compatibility

The magnetic Dragon shares its San He trio with Rat and Monkey — all three ambitious, fast, and allergic to small lives — and a famous close pair with Rooster, whose precision grounds the Dragon's scale. In love, the Dragon is generous with energy and terrible at asking for help; it thrives with a partner who is impressed without being obedient. Dog is its direct clash, a stand-off between the Dragon's flair and the Dog's principles. Rabbit, the traditional harm, is quieter: the Dragon's bluntness lands on the Rabbit like weather. The Dragon's fix in both is the same muscle — asking instead of announcing.

🐍 Snake Compatibility

Strategic Snake forms its trio with Ox and Rooster — a group that runs on standards, discretion, and long games — plus a classic secret-friend pair with Monkey, the one rival clever enough to be interesting. In love, the Snake is selective and private; it bonds deeply but audits constantly, and a partner who performs instead of confides gets read as a threat. Pig is its direct clash, an open book colliding with a locked diary. Tiger, its traditional harm, brings suspicion to a boil. In both difficult pairs the Snake's real work is disclosure: saying a little more, sooner, than feels strictly necessary.

🐴 Horse Compatibility

Free-spirited Horse runs in the Tiger–Horse–Dog trio, three signs that move fast and forgive fast, with Goat as its gentle close pair. In love, the Horse needs a partner with a life of their own; closeness that arrives as a cage triggers the exit plan. Rat is its direct clash — the Rat's careful accounting against the Horse's spendthrift pace, in money and in mood. Ox, its traditional harm, adds a slower grind: the Horse feels managed. Both pairs improve with the same honest deal: real freedom granted up front, in exchange for real reliability kept.

🐐 Goat Compatibility

For goat compatibility, Chinese zodiac tradition gives the gentle Goat the Horse as its close pair and the Rabbit–Goat–Pig trio as its safest company — all signs that speak in comfort rather than challenge. In love, the Goat is tender and attuned, but worry fills the space that reassurance should occupy. Ox is its direct clash, and the pattern is rigidity meeting drift: the Ox's schedule feels like criticism, the Goat's softness feels like stalling. Rat, its traditional harm, quietly keeps score in a game the Goat never agreed to play. The Goat's practical edge in both pairs is decisiveness — one clear preference, stated out loud.

🐒 Monkey Compatibility

Inventive Monkey shares its San He trio with Rat and Dragon — the zodiac's sharpest alliance of brains and ambition — with Snake as its secret friend, the only sign that can out-think it. In love, the Monkey flirts with ideas as much as people; loyalty lasts when the relationship stays interesting, so novelty is not luxury here but maintenance. Tiger is its direct clash, a running contest for the last word. Pig, its traditional harm, suffers more quietly: the Pig's sincerity keeps getting read as an angle. The Monkey's fix in both is the same — drop the cleverness and say the true thing plainly.

🐓 Rooster Compatibility

Precise Rooster completes the Snake–Rooster–Ox trio, a group bound by high standards and low tolerance for sloppiness, with Dragon as its celebrated close pair. In love, the Rooster's devotion arrives as improvement — better plans, better meals, better habits — and a partner who hears only the critique misses the care underneath. Rabbit is its direct clash, the loudest volume mismatch in the cycle: commentary against retreat. Dog, its traditional harm, grinds on judgment — the Rooster nitpicks, the Dog keeps receipts. In both pairs the Rooster's single highest-leverage habit is the compliment delivered before the correction.

🐕 Dog Compatibility

Loyal Dog runs with Tiger and Horse in its harmony trio and holds Rabbit as its close pair — devotion matched with softness. In love, the Dog is in it for the long run and needs honesty more than fireworks; betrayal is the one draft this sign does not forgive. Dragon is its direct clash, ideals against ego, and the arguments are loud because both sides are certain. Rooster, its traditional harm, wears the Dog down with small judgments. The dog zodiac compatibility chart above doubles as a quick reference for every Dog pairing; within the hard ones, the Dog's best tool is letting a partner be imperfect on purpose.

🐖 Pig Compatibility

Generous Pig belongs to the Rabbit–Goat–Pig trio, the gentlest alliance in the cycle, with Tiger as its secret friend — the protector who enjoys the Pig's warmth without trying to budget it. In love, the Pig gives plainly and wants warmth returned in kind; shared meals, travel, and rest are this sign's love language. Snake is its direct clash, privacy against openness, and the Pig keeps getting surprised by motives it never suspected. Monkey, its traditional harm, is subtler — the Monkey's games confuse a sign that does not play any. In both, the Pig's protection is the same: act on the first red flag, not the fifth.

Chinese Zodiac Love Compatibility

Use the pairing notes as a conversation starter, not a test of whether you should date someone. Which descriptions fit your actual experience, and which do not? Discuss how you communicate, spend time together, and handle disagreements.

A high zodiac score does not predict chemistry, and a low score does not rule it out. The number represents a traditional animal relationship in this tool, not a measurement of two people.

Chinese Zodiac Marriage Compatibility

Animal-sign matching is one part of Chinese matchmaking traditions. Full BaZi readings consider the year, month, day, and hour of birth; this calculator compares only the zodiac-year animals.

For marriage decisions, talk about money, household responsibilities, boundaries, and shared plans. Neither this score nor its traditional interpretation can establish trust or predict how long a relationship will last.

How Chinese Zodiac Compatibility Is Calculated

The traditional relationships include four supportive trios (San He), six close pairs (Liu He), six direct clashes (Liu Chong), six harm pairs (Liu Hai), and punishment patterns (Xing). We assign scores to summarize these traditional zodiac pairings. The scores are not traditional measurements or scientifically validated probabilities of relationship success.

Scores for traditional Chinese zodiac pairings
RelationshipChineseScore / 100
Three Harmonies (San He)三合88
Six Harmonies (Liu He)六合84
Same sign同肖72
No special combination—64
Harm (Liu Hai)六害44
Punishment (Xing)刑38
Clash (Liu Chong)六冲28

When patterns overlap, this calculator checks clash, punishment, harm, Three Harmonies, then Six Harmonies, in that order. For example, Snake–Monkey is a close pair but also has a punishment pattern, so this tool uses the punishment score. Traditional interpretations can differ in how they weigh overlapping patterns.

Four signs — Dragon, Horse, Rooster, and Pig — also carry a self-punishment pattern when paired with themselves, which is why two Dragons score lower than two Oxen. Yin and Yang and the five elements add another layer in full Chinese astrology readings; this calculator compares animal signs only and does not include those other factors.

Chinese Zodiac Compatibility Beyond Romance

Friendship

Harmony trios were originally alliances — three signs that instinctively trust each other. They translate directly into easy, low-maintenance friendships.

Family

Siblings and relatives with clash signs are not doomed — the friction usually shows up as very different tempos under one roof.

Parent–Child

Looking for a parent-child Chinese zodiac compatibility calculator? The same animal chart applies. Read a difficult pair as a temperament difference to manage, never as a grading of your child.

Work relationships

Business partners traditionally checked signs before founding together. A clash pair can still be a strong team when the division of labor keeps them out of each other’s lane.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Chinese zodiac signs are most compatible?+

The classic high-compatibility pairs come from two traditional groupings. The Three Harmonies trios are Rat–Dragon–Monkey, Ox–Snake–Rooster, Tiger–Horse–Dog, and Rabbit–Goat–Pig. The Six Harmonies close pairs are Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, and Horse–Goat. These are traditionally supportive groupings, though some pairs also have conflicting patterns. See the scoring guide for an explanation of pairs with mixed relationships. Read each animal on the 12 Chinese zodiac signs page

Which Chinese zodiac signs are least compatible?+

The six clash (Liu Chong) pairs sit directly opposite each other on the zodiac wheel: Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, and Snake–Pig. The six harm (Liu Hai) pairs — such as Rat–Goat and Ox–Horse — are quieter but still traditionally difficult. A clash or harm pairing does not mean that two people cannot have a good relationship.

How accurate is Chinese zodiac compatibility?+

Chinese zodiac compatibility is a traditional astrological framework rather than a scientifically validated predictor of relationship success. We assign scores to summarize traditional animal pairings. These scores are not probabilities of success or measurements of love, trust, or communication. Treat it as cultural interpretation, not a decision about two real people.

Can I calculate compatibility using birth dates?+

Yes. Choose “By birth date” and enter both birthdays. The calculator checks each person's sign using Chinese New Year dates, including January and February birthdays. If you already know both signs, choose “By animal sign” to compare them directly. Need only one person's animal first? Use the Chinese Zodiac Calculator

Does the Chinese zodiac element affect compatibility?+

Traditional readings often weigh the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and Yin/Yang on top of the animal relationships. This calculator compares animal signs only; it does not include elements or Yin/Yang in the compatibility score. Your element still matters for your full sign — a Wood Dragon and a Metal Dragon are different signs — and you can look it up with our Chinese Zodiac Element Calculator

Is Chinese zodiac compatibility used for marriage?+

Animal-sign matching is part of Chinese matchmaking traditions. Full BaZi readings consider the year, month, day, and hour of birth, while this calculator uses only the year-animal signs. Treat the result as a conversation starter, not evidence for or against a marriage. Discuss actual communication, responsibilities, and shared plans rather than relying on the score.
