1979 Chinese Zodiac: Year of the Earth Goat

1979 is the Year of the Earth Goat. The same zodiac animal may be called Sheep or Ram in English; all three names translate 羊 (Yáng), the eighth animal in the 12-year cycle. Its full stem-branch name is 己未, Jǐ Wèi: Yin Earth paired with the Goat's earthly branch.

For this year, the calendar year alone is not enough. The Earth Goat begins on January 28, 1979, so the first 27 days of January remain in the Earth Horse year.

For every Goat year, broader cultural meanings, and element variations, see the Year of the Goat (Sheep).

The zodiac changes at Chinese New Year, not on January 1. That makes January 1–27, 1979 an Earth Horse period and January 28 the first day of the Earth Goat year. Two people born in January 1979 can therefore have different zodiac animals.

The Goat year continues into early 1980. February 15, 1980 is still Earth Goat; on February 16, 1980, the cycle moves to the Metal Monkey. Use an exact birth date for either edge of the lunar year.

The 1979 lunar calendar included a leap sixth month, from July 24 to August 22. It added a thirteenth lunar month to the year, making the 1979 Goat lunar year 384 days long.

A leap month keeps lunar months aligned with the seasonal solar year. It does not create another zodiac animal or change the Earth Goat label: every date from January 28, 1979 through February 15, 1980 remains in the same Goat year.

The 1979 Chinese zodiac element is Earth. More precisely, the heavenly stem is 己 (Jǐ), Yin Earth, paired with 未 (Wèi), the Goat's earthly branch. Together they make 己未, Jǐ Wèi, the Yin Earth Goat year.

1978 is Yang Earth Horse, while 1979 is Yin Earth Goat. The zodiac animal changes at the January boundary, but the year element remains Earth on both sides. This is why a calendar-year chart can get part of the answer right while still missing the animal and polarity.

What Does Yin Earth Mean for the 1979 Goat?

In traditional five-element symbolism, Earth is associated with stability, patience, practicality, responsibility, and maintaining order. Yin Earth is often described with quieter, receptive images — cultivated soil rather than a mountain. These metaphors explain a traditional label; they are not scientific judgments about the personality of people born in 1979.

The year element comes from the heavenly stem, not a separate Na Yin classification. Although 己未 has the Na Yin name “Heavenly Fire,” the standard heavenly-stem five-element system classifies 1979 as an Earth Goat, not a Fire Goat.

Earth Goat Strengths

Traditional Earth Goat descriptions combine the Goat's sensitivity and creative eye with steadiness, patience, and a desire to make a comfortable life durable. The cultural archetype values care that shows up in practical ways: finishing work, tending relationships, and keeping a shared space in order.

Potential Challenges

The same tradition cautions that a wish for security can become over-caution, attachment to the familiar, or worry before a decision. These descriptions are folklore, not a personality test or a prediction of anyone's future.

How Is an Earth Goat Different?

Other Goat years carry different elements: Metal is often framed as more exacting, Water as more adaptable, Wood as more outward-growing, and Fire as more visible. Earth emphasizes ballast and maintenance. In traditional comparisons, an Earth Goat may be pictured as the person who turns a beautiful idea into a livable room, a finished meal, or a plan with enough time and resources behind it.

That contrast is a way to distinguish the year-sign language, not a ranking of people. A Water Goat is not necessarily indecisive, nor is an Earth Goat automatically practical; the element labels are cultural metaphors. For the fuller Goat profile, visit the Year of the Goat (Sheep).

Traditional Goat charts group Rabbit and Pig in the Three Harmonies and pair Horse with Goat in the Six Harmonies. Three Harmonies refers to a three-sign group traditional charts treat as cooperative; Six Harmonies is a paired relationship sometimes called a secret-friend match. Neither measures attraction or predicts whether a relationship will succeed.

Ox is the direct clash; Rat is a harm relationship and Dog is a punishment pattern. Those are separate categories of traditional tension, not a list of people to avoid. Use the chart as cultural context rather than a love score.

The Goat repeats every 12 years, but its element changes across a 60-year stem-branch cycle. That is why 1967 is Fire Goat, 1979 is Earth Goat, 1991 is Metal Goat, 2003 is Water Goat, 2015 is Wood Goat, and 2027 is Fire Goat.

The full 己未 Yin Earth Goat combination repeats every 60 years: 1919, 1979, and 2039. Sharing the Goat animal does not mean sharing the same complete year sign.
